## Content

## In Short
Sterling Bank is joining Renaissance Africa Energy’s vendor financing scheme to improve access to capital for indigenous oil and gas contractors in Nigeria.

## What Happened
Sterling Bank has signed on to Renaissance Africa Energy’s vendor financing scheme. The programme helps local contractors get funding to deliver oil and gas projects.

Vendor financing is a structure where a large buyer, in this case an energy company, works with banks to fund its suppliers. It can reduce the cash crunch that happens when contractors must pay for materials and labour long before they get paid.

With Sterling Bank’s entry, the scheme now includes 13 financial institutions. Renaissance and the lenders disclosed combined financing commitments of $4.1 billion and ₦435 billion.

## Why It Matters
Indigenous oil and gas contractors often struggle with working capital, which is the money needed to run day-to-day operations while waiting for invoices to be settled. In capital-heavy sectors like oil and gas, gaps in cashflow can delay projects and increase costs.

A larger lender pool can mean bigger ticket sizes, more predictable access to credit, and potentially better terms for qualified vendors. It also spreads risk across multiple banks instead of relying on one lender.

For banks, these schemes can be attractive because the financing is tied to verified contracts and payments within a defined supply chain. That can lower default risk compared to unsecured lending.

For Nigeria’s energy value chain, better financing for local contractors can support project execution, local content participation, and job creation, especially as operators push more work to domestic firms.
