## Content

## In Short
Startbutton has opened early access to Trot, a product that bundles pay-ins, treasury, FX, and payouts behind one API.

## What Happened
[Startbutton](/startbutton) says Trot is built to help companies move money across Africa with fewer separate integrations. In early access, Trot offers a single account and a single API (a standard way software connects to software) for collections, balance management, currency conversion, routing, and payouts.

The company says it has built licensed collection and payout rails across 16 African markets. It also says more than 700 merchants from over 30 countries have settled on those rails, with most volume coming from fintechs and aggregators.

According to Startbutton, customer feedback pushed it to build more control and visibility into money movement. The company says many businesses want to manage balances, shift between local currencies and stablecoins, and send payouts without relying on a long chain of third parties.

Trot’s pitch is “one treasury for fiat and stablecoins”. Fiat means government-issued money like NGN or KES. Stablecoins are crypto tokens that aim to keep a steady price, usually pegged to the US dollar, like USDT.

Startbutton says 70% of its settlement volume already moves through stablecoins. Trot is meant to unify these flows so teams do not have separate providers for local collection, crypto settlement, and FX.

For FX, Trot shows live quotes and lets customers choose when to convert, with an audit trail, meaning a recorded history of each conversion. For crypto businesses, it supports on-ramp and off-ramp flows, meaning converting local currency to USDT and converting USDT back to local payouts.

## Why It Matters
Cross-border payments in Africa can touch banks, PSPs (payment service providers), aggregators, FX providers, and payout networks. Each handoff can create failures, delays, and reconciliation gaps, which is the back-office work of matching transactions to balances.

If Trot works as described, it could reduce operational overhead for fintechs, remittance firms, global merchants, and exchanges that need multi-country collections and payouts. It also signals how stablecoins are becoming a default settlement rail for many Africa-focused businesses, especially where FX liquidity and payout reliability are ongoing pain points.

The key questions for buyers will be pricing, access criteria for production, and how resilient the connected provider network is during outages and regulatory changes.
