## Content

## In Short
Standard Chartered has launched institutional custody for Ripple USD, also called RLUSD, on the XRP Ledger.

## What Happened
Standard Chartered said institutional custody of RLUSD is now live for eligible clients. RLUSD is a stablecoin, which is a crypto token designed to track the value of a fiat currency, in this case the US dollar.

The service is offered through [Standard Chartered Bank](/standard-chartered-bank), via its DIFC Branch in Dubai. The branch is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority.

The bank also said it is working with Ripple and LMAX Group on a planned collateral integration. Collateral is an asset a trader pledges as security to open or maintain trading positions, similar to a refundable deposit.

A key part of the proposal is Standard Chartered’s “collateral mirroring” model. Instead of moving the underlying RLUSD to the trading venue, the bank would mirror the value of that RLUSD to LMAX Group. Standard Chartered says this can reduce transfer-related operational risk and help manage counterparty exposure, which is the risk that the other side of a trade fails to meet its obligations.

Standard Chartered noted that the future integration is still subject to final documentation, successful testing, internal approvals, and local legal and regulatory readiness.

## Why It Matters
Banks are trying to make stablecoins usable inside familiar institutional workflows like custody, collateral, and regulated trading. For institutions with African exposure, this matters because stablecoins are increasingly used for treasury management, cross-border settlement, and liquidity moves, especially where local currency volatility and correspondent banking delays are real constraints.

If the planned setup goes live, it could make RLUSD easier to use for institutional trading without forcing clients to transfer tokens across venues. That can simplify controls around asset safekeeping and reduce the number of on-chain movements that operations teams have to monitor.

It is also another signal that major global banks want a role in the “picks and shovels” layer of digital assets, custody, risk controls, and collateral management, rather than only payments or trading access.
