## Content

## In Short
Standard Chartered has executed a USD25 million gender equality-focused repo transaction with QNB Türkiye. The funding is intended to support lending to eligible women-led SMEs in Türkiye.

## What Happened
Standard Chartered said it completed its first repo financing transaction that is explicitly linked to women’s economic empowerment.

A repo, short for repurchase agreement, is a short-term loan where one party sells securities and agrees to buy them back later. It is often used as a liquidity tool, meaning it helps banks access cash without selling long-term assets.

Under the deal, the transaction aligns with QNB Türkiye’s Sustainable Finance and Product Framework. QNB Türkiye plans to use the funding to finance eligible women-led small and medium-sized enterprises.

QNB Türkiye’s framework defines a women-led SME as a business that meets set ownership or leadership thresholds. These include majority female ownership, significant female ownership combined with management representation, or female operational leadership.

Standard Chartered executive Caroline Eber-Ittel said the structure shows how capital markets financing can be linked to social outcomes while still meeting funding and liquidity needs. QNB Türkiye CEO Ömür Tan said the bank views women’s economic participation as part of a broader approach that includes entrepreneurship, employment, education, and access to finance.

## Why It Matters
This deal signals a push to broaden sustainable finance beyond climate themes.

For founders and operators, the important point is the mechanism, not just the headline amount. When banks can connect wholesale funding, meaning money raised from large financial markets, to measurable social goals, they can create more room for targeted SME lending.

It also shows how banks are starting to attach specific eligibility rules to funding. Over time, clearer definitions and reporting standards could make it easier to compare gender-focused finance products across markets, including in Africa’s banking and fintech sectors.
