## Content

## In Short
Standard Chartered has launched institutional Bitcoin and Ether spot trading in the UAE.

## What Happened
Standard Chartered said it is expanding institutional Bitcoin and Ether spot trading in the UAE through Standard Chartered DIFC.

This is a spot trading service, meaning clients buy or sell at the current market price, rather than using derivatives (contracts that track a price, like a bet on future moves). The bank said the trades are deliverable, meaning eligible clients can receive or deliver the actual Bitcoin or Ether, not just cash settlement.

The offering is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority, and runs through the Dubai International Financial Centre, a financial hub that licenses and supervises firms.

Standard Chartered also said it is the first Global Systemically Important Bank, or G-SIB, to offer institutional spot crypto trading in the UAE market. A G-SIB is a very large bank that regulators treat as critical to the global financial system.

Clients can access BTC/USD and ETH/USD trading through the bank’s electronic trading channels. Standard Chartered said the crypto trading flow is integrated into its existing FX interfaces, so institutional users can trade crypto through tools similar to foreign exchange screens.

On settlement and custody, clients can use a custodian of their choice, including the bank’s own custody product. Custody is the secure storage of digital assets, similar to how a securities custodian holds shares on behalf of an investor.

The bank said this UAE launch adds execution, the ability to place and complete trades, to its earlier custody capability that went live in September 2024. Standard Chartered first introduced institutional spot Bitcoin and Ether trading via its UK branch in July 2025.

## Why It Matters
Regulated bank-led spot trading can make crypto access simpler for institutions that need clear controls, compliance checks, and audited processes.

For regional markets, this is another signal that crypto exposure is shifting from retail apps to institution-grade infrastructure, including custody, trading, and governance inside licensed financial centres.

It also adds pressure on other large banks and regulated brokers operating in the region to clarify if they will offer deliverable spot crypto, or stick to custody-only and structured products.
