## Content

## In Short
African banks are increasing AI spending, but many are not measuring whether it pays off.

## What Happened: AI Spend Rises Even Without ROI Tracking
Standard Bank is one example of how African lenders are putting artificial intelligence, meaning software that can automate and learn patterns, into day to day bank operations.

A 2026 report surveying 277 banking executives across 37 African nations found that 83.2% of institutions plan to increase their AI spending over the next 12 months. At the same time, nearly a third of institutions do not formally track return on investment, meaning how much financial value they get back compared to what they spend.

The report also found that among lenders that do not measure returns at all, 82% still plan to expand their AI budgets.

TechCabal flagged several cost and delivery constraints linked to this trend, including dollar denominated cloud hosting bills, legacy core banking integration bottlenecks, and a regional deficit of machine learning engineers.

## What Happened: Standard Bank Shares Speed Gains
Standard Bank said AI has reduced the time needed for parts of its loan documentation work. In its commercial asset finance division, a vetting process that previously took roughly an hour now takes about 60 seconds.

Standard Bank disclosed the metric in its Capital Markets Day filing in March 2026.

The bank also reported that its conversational bot handles 65% of all incoming digital customer queries.

## Why It Matters
Banks often justify AI spending as a way to improve productivity and efficiency. The report suggests many African lenders are moving ahead with bigger AI budgets without the kind of return tracking that would show whether those gains translate into audited financial impact.

The result is a gap between faster operations and proven balance sheet yield, while banks still face high cloud costs, integration delays with older core banking systems, and a shortage of machine learning engineers.
