## Content

## In Short
Spendin is preparing to launch an eSIM service as it expands beyond payments into travel and connectivity.

## What Happened
South Africa-headquartered fintech [Spendin](/spendin) is preparing to enter the eSIM market, adding mobile data packages to its existing cross-border payments and card offering.

An eSIM is a built-in digital SIM that lets you add a mobile plan without inserting a physical SIM card. For travellers, that can mean buying data in a few taps instead of hunting for a local SIM at the airport.

Spendin says its eSIM service will let users purchase and activate data bundles across African and international destinations. The company expects to accept local currencies, cards, and digital assets as payment options.

Co-founder and CEO Timilehin Kayode said the goal is to reduce “fragmentation” for travellers, meaning the need to juggle multiple apps for money and connectivity. Co-founder and COO Heritage Falodun added that product expansion is shaped by recurring user feedback.

Spendin is also positioning its infrastructure for other businesses. Its Alpha API, an API that lets other apps connect to Spendin’s cross-border rails, is being pitched to businesses and fintechs that want to embed international payments.

## Why It Matters
Spendin is targeting a growing eSIM opportunity. The African eSIM market was estimated at about $280 million in 2025, and projected to reach roughly $334 million by 2030.

For African fintechs, eSIMs are becoming part of the travel stack, alongside multi-currency wallets, FX tools, and cards. If Spendin executes well, it could increase user retention by keeping travellers in one app for both payments and data.

For the wider ecosystem, the move shows how fintechs are competing on “bundle depth,” meaning more services around the core wallet. That creates new partnership openings with telecom operators, travel platforms, and eSIM wholesalers, but it also increases regulatory and operational complexity as products spread across more sectors.
