## Content

## In Short
Sizwe Hosmed has confirmed it moved to self-administration from 1 September 2026. That replaces an earlier date of 1 August 2026.

## What Happened
[Sizwe Hosmed](/sizwe-hosmed) published a member communication dated 4 September 2026 saying the medical scheme is transitioning to self-administration from 1 September 2026.

Self-administration means the scheme brings key day-to-day admin work in-house. This typically includes member support, processing claims, managing authorisations, and handling scheme communication, instead of outsourcing these tasks to a third-party administrator.

In the same update, Sizwe Hosmed said it will hold a Special General Meeting on 14 November 2026. The SGM is meant to update members and other stakeholders on progress made over the past year and what is planned for 2027.

The communication also outlines areas the scheme wants to improve during the transition. These include more responsive service, clearer communication, stronger accountability, and “continuous improvement” based on member feedback.

Sizwe Hosmed also pointed to financial goals. It said it wants to improve its solvency ratio beyond its current 40% as at 31 July 2026. A solvency ratio is a buffer of assets over liabilities, like a financial safety cushion that helps a medical scheme pay claims.

## Why It Matters
For members, administration changes can affect how quickly queries are resolved and claims are handled. A move to self-administration can reduce handoffs between organisations, but it also increases operational responsibility on the scheme.

For the wider South African health sector, the update is a reminder that governance and operational execution matter as much as benefits design. The SGM in November will be a key checkpoint for whether the new operating model is improving service and financial resilience.
