## Content

## In Short
Prudential bought back 2,767,389 ordinary shares between September 1 and September 4, 2026. The shares will be cancelled, which reduces the total shares in issue.

## What Happened
[Prudential](/prudential) said it repurchased 2,767,389 of its ordinary shares of 5 pence each from JP Morgan Securities plc. The trades ran over four days, from September 1 to September 4, 2026, on the London Stock Exchange’s main market (XLON).

A share buyback is when a company uses cash to purchase its own shares from the market. Cancellation means those shares are removed permanently, which reduces the number of shares investors can trade.

Prudential’s daily repurchases were:

- September 1: 387,822 shares at a volume-weighted average price of 10.0502 GBP
- September 2: 645,539 shares at 10.0186 GBP
- September 3: 671,954 shares at 10.2186 GBP
- September 4: 661,774 shares at 10.2537 GBP

After cancelling the repurchased shares, Prudential said it will have 2,492,828,558 shares in issue. The company also said the total voting rights figure will match that number, which shareholders use when calculating disclosure thresholds under UK market rules.

Prudential noted the transactions were executed on exchange under London Stock Exchange listing rules, and also treated as on-market purchases for Hong Kong’s share buyback code.

## Why It Matters
For investors, buybacks are a common way to return capital. They can also increase earnings per share because the same profits are spread across fewer shares.

For operators watching listed financial services firms with African exposure, this is another signal that Prudential is sticking with its 2026 buyback programme structure, using a broker to execute repurchases and then cancelling the shares.

Prudential said that since the start of its buyback programme, it has acquired 61,118,411 shares at a volume-weighted average price of 1,080.7512 pence.
