## What Happened: PayJustNow BNPL For Medicross Primary Care
South African payments platform PayJustNow is expanding into primary care through Netcare Medicross. The deal makes [PayJustNow](/payjustnow) available at Medicross medical and dental centres from 18 May.

The product is a BNPL option, short for buy now, pay later. In simple terms, it lets a patient pay for a visit or treatment in smaller instalments, instead of paying the full bill at once.

Netcare Medicross is part of Netcare’s Primary Care Division. It is one of South Africa’s largest private primary healthcare networks, with more than 1.5 million visits a year across Medicross and Primecure centres in eight provinces.

PayJustNow says the move is aimed at time-sensitive care like GP visits and dental treatment. Dean Hyde, PayJustNow’s COO, says the point is not to push extra spending, but to offer predictable repayments that fit a household budget.

Netcare Medicross managing director Sara Nayager says the option helps patients handle upfront costs while providers still get paid in full at the time of service.

## Why It Matters: BNPL Moves From Retail to Essential Healthcare
BNPL in South Africa is often associated with retail categories like fashion and homeware. This partnership signals a shift toward essential services, where delaying payment can mean delaying care.

For fintech operators, it also shows how payments products are moving into new merchant categories beyond conventional retail. For clinics, it is a way to reduce payment friction at reception without taking on credit risk themselves.

The bigger question to watch is how providers and regulators treat BNPL in healthcare, especially around affordability checks and responsible lending, when the “purchase” is a medical need.
