## In Short
Payd plans to restart its payments services on Friday. The Kenyan fintech paused some payouts after foreign exchange losses left it short of funds needed to meet customer balances.

## What Happened
[Payd](/payd) is a Kenyan payments startup focused on freelancers, contractors, and businesses that receive international payments and convert them into local currency.

The company said it will resume services across its app, WhatsApp chatbot, business platform, and API. An API is a software connector that lets other apps send requests to Payd, like a “plug” into its payments rails.

Payd had paused payouts around May after FX losses. FX losses happen when money moves across currencies and the exchange rate changes between the time you promise a payout and the time you buy or deliver that currency.

Payd said the disruption led it to overhaul its treasury system. Treasury here means how the company manages cash, currencies, and timing so it can meet customer withdrawals and payouts.

The startup has denied shutting down, after some customers reported transfers failing and questioned the lack of communication during the pause.

## Why It Matters
Payd’s restart will be watched closely by users who depend on predictable cross-border payouts for salary-like income. For many freelancers and remote workers, delayed transfers can quickly turn into rent and bill problems.

The episode also highlights a less visible risk in Africa’s cross-border payments market. A fintech can process large volumes and still lose money if it does not match currencies, settlement timing, and funding costs.

For operators, the key issue is “currency mismatch” and “timing mismatch”. That is when a company holds funds in one currency, but owes customers another currency, and has to buy that currency later at a worse rate.

If Payd’s new treasury controls work, it could restore trust and reduce the chance of another payout pause. If not, it may increase scrutiny on how multi-currency fintechs manage customer balances.
