## In Short

- The fintech says its system includes over 5,000 monitoring and blocking rules.
- OPay also says it uses digital identity checks like live facial detection to stop fake accounts.

## What Happened: OPay AI Fraud Detection In Nigeria Payments
[OPay](/opay) says it has spent the past three years building its own AML and CFT risk-control and compliance system. AML and CFT mean anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing, which are controls meant to spot and stop illegal money flows.

OPay says the system combines artificial intelligence and big-data analysis with real-time transaction monitoring. In simple terms, it is software that watches payment activity as it happens and flags patterns that look abnormal, similar to how email spam filters learn what suspicious messages look like.

According to the company, the platform uses more than 5,000 monitoring and blocking rules and over 10,000 risk-feature profiles to assess transaction behaviour. When activity is confirmed as suspicious, OPay says it can block transactions and freeze or permanently suspend accounts.

The company claims these controls have helped keep its transaction fraud rate below 0.001%. It also says it has blocked more than one million fake identities, and that its live facial-detection system blocks tens of thousands of attack attempts each day.

## Why It Matters: Fraud Controls And CBN Rules For Digital Payments
Nigeria’s digital payments market keeps growing, and that brings more targets for fraudsters. The Central Bank of Nigeria has also been tightening rules, including restrictions on transactions from newly activated banking devices and tighter controls on BVN-linked phone number changes. BVN is the Bank Verification Number, which is a national identity check used across Nigerian banks.

For fintechs and merchant networks, stronger monitoring and identity verification can reduce losses and improve trust. For users, it can mean fewer account takeovers and fewer scam-driven transfers, even if it sometimes adds extra steps during sign-up or device changes.
