## Content

## In Short
Nomba has expanded its DR Congo payments network to cover Zambia. Congolese businesses can now pay Zambian suppliers instantly to bank accounts or mobile wallets.

## What Happened
[Nomba](/nomba), a Nigerian business banking platform, says it has extended its payments service in the Democratic Republic of Congo into neighbouring Zambia.

The new link allows Congolese companies to pay Zambian suppliers in US dollars or Congolese francs. Funds arrive instantly, either into a bank account or a mobile wallet.

Nomba said it is working through licensed local partners in Zambia, rather than operating under its own Zambia licence. The company did not share fees, FX rates, or the settlement process, which is the behind-the-scenes final transfer of funds between institutions.

For now, the service is one-directional. It focuses on payments from DR Congo into Zambia. Nomba has not said when Zambian businesses will be able to send payments back into DR Congo.

## Why It Matters
DR Congo and Zambia is becoming a high-volume trade corridor, but payments on the route are still slow and cash-heavy. The Bank of Zambia said Zambia’s goods exports to Congo hit $1.6 billion in 2025, up about a third from the year before.

When payments take days, SMEs lose working capital, which is the cash tied up in day-to-day operations like inventory and supplier bills. Faster cross-border settlement can reduce that pressure, especially for wholesale, retail, and agriculture-linked trade.

Nomba says it processes more than $70 billion in payments annually and is aiming for over $1 billion per month in cross-border volume. It also plans to add more services on this corridor over time, including deposits, foreign exchange, and credit, as partnerships mature.

The move also shows how fintechs are expanding via partner licensing to enter new markets faster. Expect more competition on busy African trade routes as AfCFTA pushes demand for simpler business-to-business payments.
