## Content

## In Short
Nigeria’s Federal Government, through NITDA, is developing a National Innovation Hub Standards Framework. It is meant to set shared standards for the country’s 339 identified innovation hubs and improve how they support startups.

## What Happened
NITDA, Nigeria’s top government agency for IT policy and digital development, says it has identified more than 339 innovation hubs across the country.

At a validation workshop in Abuja, NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa said the National Innovation Hub Standards Framework will provide a common approach for hubs to assess their capacity, spot gaps, and improve over time.

The framework is designed as a guide, not a rigid checklist. NITDA says it includes seven dimensions and around 35 assessment categories. These categories are meant to help hubs measure “maturity”, meaning how ready they are to run services like incubation, mentoring, product support, and investor readiness.

Inuwa also said many hubs are clustered in Lagos and Abuja, plus about 10 other states. The government wants to decentralise the ecosystem so more states can build stronger local startup pipelines.

## Why It Matters
A shared standards framework can make it easier to compare hub quality across Nigeria, and to target public or private support where it is most needed.

It could also reduce confusion for founders. Today, “innovation hub” can mean anything from a training centre to a full startup incubator. Clear categories may help startups know what support to expect.

Inuwa also called for more private sector risk capital, meaning funding that accepts startup-level uncertainty. He said a functional innovation ecosystem depends on talent, investors, large corporates, and government working together.

NITDA added it is working with the education ministry to embed digital skills in formal learning, and it wants stronger university and industry collaboration on research and entrepreneurship.
