## Content

## In Short
- NIMC says Nigeria’s national identity database is hosted entirely in Nigeria.
- The agency says the core database is managed by NIMC employees, not external vendors.
- NIMC says it does not use cloud hosting for the core system and has disaster recovery in place.

## What Happened
Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, says the national identity database is hosted locally and managed by its own staff. The disclosure was made by Alvan Ikoku, director of NIMC’s Strategic Programme Office, during a briefing with journalists.

NIMC is the government agency responsible for the National Identification Number, often called NIN. NIN is a unique ID number used to verify people for services like SIM registration, banking checks, and government programs.

Ikoku said the database has never been hosted outside Nigeria. He also said NIMC does not use cloud hosting for the core database. Cloud hosting means using rented computing infrastructure run by a third party, similar to storing files in an online drive you do not control.

NIMC also said it has disaster recovery systems. That means backups and failover setups that keep services running if a primary system fails.

## Why It Matters
This statement lands in a period where data localisation is a growing policy and public concern. Hosting data within national borders can reduce some legal and geopolitical risks. It can also make it easier for local regulators to enforce rules.

But local hosting does not automatically prevent leaks. As more government agencies and service providers connect to the identity system, the main security question becomes who can access what data, and under what controls.

Access controls are the technical and procedural gates that limit data use, like role-based permissions and audit logs that record every lookup. Accountability matters too, because breaches often come from misuse by authorised insiders, not only external hackers.

For startups and operators that build identity verification, fraud checks, and onboarding flows, the practical impact is clear. Stronger governance around NIN queries, logging, and third-party access will shape trust in Nigeria’s digital identity rails.
