## In Short
- Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education has opened the Student Venture Capital Grant.
- Student-led ventures can access up to ₦50 million in equity-free funding.
- Funding is released in tranches, based on pre-agreed milestones.

## What Happened
Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education has opened applications for the Student Venture Capital Grant, a grant programme that offers up to ₦50 million per student-led venture without taking equity.

Equity-free means founders do not give away ownership in exchange for the money. The programme’s “venture capital” label may confuse some founders, because it is not a traditional VC fund.

Funding is paid in tranches, meaning teams draw down money in parts as they hit milestones they agreed upfront. This makes ₦50 million a maximum amount, not an automatic payout.

The ministry also says it will provide validation support, business model guidance, and a listing in an S-VCG Innovation Repository. The repository is positioned as a catalogue of submitted projects that can stay visible to investors, institutions, and potential partners. Teams that are not funded will still receive feedback on their applications.

The grant targets STEMM ventures, including science and biotech, agriculture, software and hardware, AI, engineering and industrial solutions, mathematics and data, financial modelling, and health and medical technology.

Eligibility rules narrow the pool. Applicants must be enrolled in a Nigerian tertiary institution and be at 300 level or equivalent. Younger students can join teams, but a 300-level student must lead and be a co-founder or partner.

Teams must also have a venture registered with Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission and show they are beyond proof-of-concept, with something working in practice. Applicants need a business plan with spending milestones and KPIs, which are measurable targets used to track progress.

## Why It Matters
For Nigerian student founders, most pitch competitions offer ₦1 million to ₦5 million. A ₦50 million cap, with no equity taken, is a larger pool of non-dilutive capital.

Still, milestone-based disbursement can be slow if approvals lag, and early-stage teams often need fast cash to build and sell. The application portal is live at svcg.education.gov.ng, but no closing date is published, so teams may want to apply early.
