## Content

## In Short
- Nigeria startup funding totalled $11.3 million in September 2026 across nine startups.
- That is a 96.9% drop from August’s $364.1 million, which was boosted by a few very large rounds.
- Debt financing, which is money a startup must pay back like a loan, made up the biggest single deals.

## What Happened
Nigeria startup funding cooled sharply in September 2026. Nine startups raised a combined $11.3 million, compared with $364.1 million raised by 20 startups in August.

August’s number was unusually high because of large transactions, including [Moove](/moove) raising $250 million in a Series C round, [Jumia](/jumia) raising $50 million, and [Yellow Card](/yellow-card) raising $40 million. With those out of the picture, September looks more like a “normal” month where smaller cheques dominate.

The biggest deals in September were two $3 million debt facilities, one for [Nomba](/nomba) and one for [Drive45](/drive45). Together, those two transactions accounted for $6 million, about 53% of the month’s total.

Deeptech startup ChipMango also stood out, raising $2.1 million across two separate transactions. A seed round brought in $1.9 million, then an additional $200,000 venture round followed in the same month.

## Why It Matters
The September figures show a continued shift toward smaller rounds and more debt-led funding. Debt can be faster than equity, but it adds repayment pressure, especially for startups still proving revenue.

The data also highlights a split between deal count and capital raised. September 2026 had more funded startups than September 2025, nine versus seven, but total funding was far lower. That suggests more founders are still getting investor attention, but cheque sizes are tighter.

For operators, this is another signal to plan for longer fundraising cycles, prioritise cash flow, and treat large “headline” months as outliers rather than the baseline.
