## In Short
Nigeria has launched a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System.

It assigns a unique 11-character postcode to every addressable building.

Officials say it should reduce failed deliveries and support emergency response, security, and financial services.

## What Happened
Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the launch of the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System on October 1, 2026.

The Nigeria digital postcode system replaces the older six-digit numeric codes with an 11-character code that combines letters and numbers.

The lookup service is available on postcode.gov.ng. It uses geographic information technology, GIS for short, which is mapping software that pins a location using coordinates, like a more precise map marker.

Government agencies estimate that failed deliveries cost Nigeria between ₦50 billion and ₦80 billion each year. The new postcode format is expected to reduce those losses by making addresses easier to find and verify.

The rollout has been years in the making. The idea dates back to around 2006, but gained momentum after NIPOST signed an agreement with the National Population Commission in 2022 to use existing mapping data. In March 2026, the Federal Executive Council approved a GIS-enabled alphanumeric system.

Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission has also been working with NIPOST to link postcodes to National Identification Numbers, NIN for short, which is the government’s unique ID number for residents.

## Why It Matters
For logistics and e-commerce operators, better addressing can mean fewer returned parcels, fewer rider call-backs, and faster last-mile delivery.

For banks and fintechs, a standard digital address can improve customer verification. That matters for KYC, “know your customer,” which is the identity and risk checks required before offering many financial services.

For public services, Nigeria is positioning the system as shared national infrastructure. Officials say it can support planning for censuses, elections, and service delivery, and improve emergency and security response by making locations easier to pinpoint.

Adoption is the key next step. Nigerians are being encouraged to look up their new postcodes and start using them for shipping, forms, and official records.
