## In Short
The Nairobi International Financial Centre (NIFCA) says it is working to set up a $250 million technology and AI fund.

NIFCA CEO Daniel Mainga shared the plan at the Africa Blockchain Festival 2026 in Nairobi.

Mainga said the fund would invest in startups and companies in Kenya and across Africa.

## What Happened: How NIFCA Frames The $250M Fund
Mainga announced the proposed fund during his opening address at the festival. He said the fund was part of a wider conversation about Africa’s ability to finance its own innovation.

Mainga valued the planned vehicle at approximately KSh35 billion. He said the investment focus would span Kenya and the wider continent.

At the event, technology founders, investors, policymakers and financial services executives discussed the relationship between capital, blockchain, artificial intelligence and Africa’s digital economy.

Mainga also raised questions about ownership and value capture in Africa’s digital businesses. He asked founders, investors and public officials to think about who owns the companies being built, where they raise money and who benefits from the value their innovations create.

He cited Kenya’s role in changing how the world moves money through M-PESA, and questioned whether the country had done enough to change who owns capital and benefits from the value created by that innovation.

## Why It Matters: Local Capital And Where African Startups Raise Money
Mainga said African businesses often have to move their “financial centre of gravity” abroad when seeking substantial investment.

His argument was that Africa’s capacity to develop technology should be matched by stronger access to capital that can support companies locally and across African markets.

If NIFCA follows through, a $250 million pool targeted at technology and AI could add another source of growth-stage funding for companies building in Kenya and across the continent.
