## What Happened
Nexus AI, a South African health tech company, says its AI-powered X-ray screening tool can analyse chest X-rays and highlight potential problems in roughly 45 seconds.

The company is targeting a real operational gap. Many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa are adding more diagnostic imaging equipment, but there are still too few radiologists to interpret results. A widely cited benchmark recommends around 100 to 120 radiologists per million people. In much of the region, the ratio is reported to be below one radiologist per 300,000 to 500,000 people.

Nigeria is a sharp example. With over 230 million people and fewer than 700 consultant radiologists, one specialist could be responsible for more than 300,000 people. Radiologists and imaging centres are also concentrated in big cities, which can delay reviews for patients outside major urban areas.

Nexus AI says its software is built to work in low-infrastructure settings. That includes environments with unreliable electricity and Internet connectivity, which can break many AI workflows that depend on always-on cloud access.

## Why It Matters
AI screening is not the same as a radiologist’s final report. It is closer to a fast triage step, like a spell-checker for medical images, it spots patterns and raises a flag for human review.

If the tool performs well in real clinics, it could shorten the time between taking an X-ray and deciding what to do next. For conditions like tuberculosis, that time savings can affect isolation decisions, follow-up testing, and treatment start times.

It also points to a bigger trend in African health tech, building “offline-capable” AI that can run closer to the patient instead of assuming stable connectivity and large specialist teams.
