## Content

## In Short
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has developed a mobile application for phone verification.

The app lets authorised industry stakeholders scan a phone’s IMEI number and upload device information to the NCC’s verification platform.

The NCC says the goal is to simplify compliance and step up enforcement of equipment approval requirements.

## What Happened: How The NCC Device Checker App Works
The NCC announced the app at a media briefing.

According to the regulator, the mobile app is built for manufacturers, importers, distributors, and phone dealers.

It is designed to support the NCC’s equipment approval requirements, which are the regulator’s rules for which devices can be sold.

The app is part of the NCC’s [Device Checker](https://www.ncc.gov.ng/devicechecker) initiative. The initiative also allows consumers to check whether devices have received regulatory approval before purchase.

The NCC says the wider platform is intended to curb the circulation of counterfeit, cloned, unauthorised, and other non-compliant devices in Nigeria.

## Why It Matters
For businesses in Nigeria’s phone supply chain, the NCC is positioning the app as a simpler way to meet compliance duties without relying only on manual reporting.

For consumers, the NCC’s Device Checker initiative is meant to help verify that a phone has regulatory approval before buying.

The move also comes as TechCabal’s analysis noted that Nigeria’s phone distribution network can complicate enforcement. Devices can move through manufacturers, major importers, regional distributors, and smaller retailers before reaching consumers, which can make it hard to establish responsibility when a device fails regulatory checks.

A scan-and-upload workflow tied to IMEI numbers, which are unique device identifiers, is one way the NCC can connect a device to its verification platform across that chain.
