## In Short
- Mukuru has launched the Mukuru Card in Botswana.
- The Visa-branded card is linked to the Mukuru Wallet.
- Users can pay in-store, shop online, and withdraw cash at ATMs.

## What Happened
[Mukuru](/mukuru) launched its Visa Companion Card in Botswana through a partnership with Access Bank Botswana and Visa. The company says the card is connected to the Mukuru Wallet, so customers can spend money held in their wallet without moving funds to a traditional bank account.

The Mukuru Card supports three everyday payment needs. It can be used for in-store purchases, online shopping with local merchants, and cash withdrawals at ATMs.

In practical terms, this adds a card layer on top of a wallet. A wallet is a stored-value account inside an app, similar to keeping money in a prepaid balance. A card then lets that balance work at card payment terminals and on e-commerce checkouts.

The rollout was supported by the three partners’ roles. Mukuru provides the wallet and customer access. Access Bank Botswana provides local banking and settlement support, meaning it helps route and finalise the money movement behind the scenes. Visa provides the card network, which is the rails that connect merchants, ATMs, and financial institutions.

## Why It Matters
Botswana has growing demand for digital payments, but wallets do not always work everywhere a card does. Adding a Visa-branded card can widen acceptance, especially for online payments and cash access via ATMs.

For Mukuru, the card launch is also a distribution move. It makes the wallet more useful for day-to-day spending, not only transfers and stored balance. That can improve customer retention and increase transaction volume.

It also signals a familiar trend in African fintech. More wallet providers are adding physical cards to compete on convenience, acceptance, and the ability to bridge cash and digital money.
