## Content

## In Short
Mukuru is repositioning from a remittance-first business into a broader neobank-style digital finance provider across parts of Africa.

## What Happened
[Mukuru](/mukuru), best known for cross-border money transfers, is expanding its product focus to cover what happens after a remittance arrives. That includes how customers store money, pay, and move funds day to day.

The company’s leadership is framing this as solving a practical problem in many African cities. People often receive money digitally, but still need cash to transact. They also have to bridge a gap between collecting cash and being able to spend it easily at nearby shops.

In a TechCabal interview, Mukuru Chief Growth Officer Juan Seco described this gap through a simple example in Harare. A recipient could get money on a phone, walk a short distance to collect cash, and then still face friction turning that cash into everyday payments.

Mukuru’s approach leans on its distribution footprint. This includes physical locations and agent points that can handle cash-in and cash-out, plus digital rails for sending and receiving value.

The strategy also reflects Seco’s background. He has worked in US financial services and previously helped build [JumiaPay](/jumiapay), before taking on a growth role spanning Southern Africa and East Africa.

## Why It Matters
“Mukuru as a neobank” is a useful shorthand, even if it does not look like a traditional app-only bank. A neobank is a digital-first financial service that offers bank-like features such as wallets, payments, and cards.

For African fintech, the big adoption bottleneck is often not the remittance itself. It is the last steps, converting received value into money that can be saved, used for bills, or spent at merchants.

If Mukuru can reduce that friction, it could strengthen customer retention. It could also increase transaction volume beyond remittances, moving Mukuru closer to being a daily-use payments and money management platform.
