## What Happened
MTN Mobile Money (U) Limited said MoMo will act as the official payments partner for Sprint for Lwakataka, an event set for 20 September 2026 at Garuga. The Sprint celebrates rally driver Ponsiano Lwakataka’s 25 years in motorsport.

As part of the partnership, MTN MoMo contributed UGX 15 million to support event preparations, including work on Lwakataka’s rally car. The company also plans to push digital payments at the venue, instead of cash-first ticketing and on-site spending.

Ticketing will run through [MoMo](/momo), MTN’s mobile money service, which lets people pay using a wallet on their phone, similar to a prepaid account linked to a SIM card. Tickets bought through MoMo cost UGX 5,000, compared to UGX 10,000 for cash purchases at the gate.

MTN said MoMo ticket buyers will have dedicated entry lanes outside the VVIP area to speed up access. On race day, MoMo customers will also get 20% off eligible purchases made through the MoMo App. Tickets can be purchased by dialing *165*20# and following prompts.

## Why It Matters
For MTN MoMo, sports events are a practical way to increase day-to-day usage of mobile money. Lower-priced digital tickets, faster entry, and in-app discounts are simple incentives that can shift users from cash to wallet payments.

For event organisers, moving ticket sales and some on-site commerce to mobile money can reduce cash handling and queues. It also creates clearer payment records, which can help with reconciliation and sponsorship reporting.

For Uganda’s fintech and mobile money market, the update shows how payment providers are competing on distribution and customer perks, not only transfers and bill payments.
