## In Short
- MoMo is pushing to convert more of MTN’s 317 million telecom subscribers into active financial services users.
- The plan goes beyond person to person transfers into lending, savings, remittances, and merchant payments.
- MoMo says it already has over 70 million monthly active users across 14 markets.

## What Happened
[MTN](/mtn) Group Fintech CEO Serigne Dioum says [MoMo](/momo) is trying to move from a mobile money product into a broader digital financial ecosystem.

Mobile money is a wallet linked to a phone number that lets people store value and send and receive money. In many African markets, it is the first “bank like” account a user gets.

Dioum’s target is MTN’s full subscriber base, about 317 million people, not just the users who already rely on MoMo for transfers. The bet is that MTN can use distribution, SIM registration, and everyday airtime behaviour to drive adoption of more services.

MoMo’s expansion focus includes lending, savings, international remittances, and merchant services. Merchant services cover tools that help businesses accept payments, manage cash in and cash out, and sell to customers more easily.

The TechCabal interview also points to MoMo’s partnership with Ant International. This is described as an existing relationship, not a new funding round.

## Why It Matters
Mobile money growth is slowing in some markets as basic transfers become common. That pushes large operators to chase higher value products like credit, savings, and business payments.

If MoMo can convert a bigger share of MTN subscribers into active wallet users, it could lift transaction volumes and open new revenue lines beyond fees on transfers.

For startups, this kind of “super app” strategy raises the bar. Competing apps may need clearer niches, deeper merchant tooling, or partnerships with telcos and banks to reach the same scale.
