## Content

## In Short
Urban Alert has built Minetrix AI to help people in Nigeria figure out who is mining around them. The tool pulls together mining and land-related public records, then makes them searchable.

## What Happened
Minetrix AI is a new AI engine, meaning software that uses machine learning to find patterns and answer questions from large datasets. It was built by Anthony Adejuwon and a team at Urban Alert after months of work.

The goal is to reduce “information opacity,” a situation where key details exist but are hard for ordinary people to access or understand. In many rural parts of Nigeria, communities see excavation equipment and haulage trucks daily, but they often cannot confirm who holds the mining licence, what mineral is being extracted, or what legal obligations exist to the host community.

According to the report, the team ingested over 37,000 public records to create the system. “Ingesting” here means collecting documents from different sources, cleaning the data, and loading it into one searchable database.

Minetrix AI is positioned as a practical research and accountability tool. It is designed to help citizens, journalists, civil society groups, and even local leaders verify claims by mining operators and compare activity on the ground with official licensing and ownership information.

## Why It Matters
Nigeria’s solid minerals sector has long struggled with illegal mining and weak community visibility into licensed operations. When communities cannot identify operators or understand licence terms, it becomes harder to demand environmental safeguards, compensation, or community development agreements.

Tools like Minetrix AI point to a growing trend in civic tech, where AI is used to simplify access to public records. If the data stays up to date and communities can reach it easily, it could improve due diligence, reduce misinformation, and strengthen local negotiations around mining rights.

It also highlights a broader opportunity for African tech builders. Turning fragmented government documents into usable, searchable services is often more valuable than building new datasets from scratch.
