## In Short
Meta has launched AI Academy Nigeria with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy. The programme combines practical AI training and a startup pitch competition. Two winning startups will each get $5,000, plus $2,000 in Meta advertising credits.

## What Happened
Meta and the FMCIDE, working through the government’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, have announced AI Academy Nigeria.

The partners include the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN). The goal is to grow Nigeria’s AI talent pipeline, which means building a steady flow of people who can learn, apply, and ship AI products.

AI Academy Nigeria targets developers, startups, students, and early-career professionals. The programme is structured around three tracks, AI Skills Development, an AI Startup Pitchathon, and a six week Developer Bootcamp.

The pitchathon is aimed at early-stage Nigerian startups that use Meta’s AI technologies. “Pitchathon” here is a short pitching competition where startups present what they built, how it works, and why it matters.

Applications for the pitchathon close on August 21, 2026. Ten startups will be shortlisted to pitch at GITEX Nigeria on September 3. Two winners will receive $5,000 each in cash, plus $2,000 in Meta advertising credits.

## Why It Matters
Nigeria is producing more AI-curious builders, but many still lack hands-on training, compute access, and pathways to early customers. Programmes like AI Academy Nigeria matter when they push people beyond tutorials and into building usable tools.

For startups, the cash is modest, but the bigger value can be the platform, the visibility at a major tech event, and the support to move from a demo to a product.

For the ecosystem, the partnership signals how government programmes like 3MTT can plug into big tech resources and local training organisations. If execution is strong, it could help Nigeria grow more job-ready AI developers and more fundable AI startups.
