## Content

## In Short
- Mastercard has launched Wallet Pay, a product aimed at making digital wallets work across more merchants, apps, and markets.
- MTN Group Fintech is among the early providers using it.
- MTN says the partnership helps connect millions of MoMo users to the global economy.

## What Happened
Mastercard launched Wallet Pay in September 2026. Mastercard Wallet Pay is designed to help wallet providers scale faster, and work better with other payment systems.

The core idea is interoperability, meaning one wallet can be used more widely without users needing a new app or a new account for each payment use case. For many users, this is the difference between a wallet that only works in one country or one network, and a wallet that works for card-like payments online and offline.

MTN Group Fintech is one of the providers adopting Wallet Pay to expand how its mobile money product can be used. MTN’s mobile money service, [MoMo](/momo), is widely used across Africa for everyday transfers, bill payments, and agent cash-in and cash-out.

MTN said the partnership with Mastercard is connecting millions of MoMo users to the global economy. In practice, that typically means easier access to global merchant acceptance, cross-border commerce, and more places where a wallet balance can be spent.

## Why It Matters
Digital wallets are common across Africa, but many remain closed loops, meaning they work well inside one provider’s network and less well outside it. That friction makes cross-border trade harder for individuals and small businesses, and it limits how far mobile money can go beyond peer-to-peer transfers.

If Wallet Pay helps wallets plug into wider acceptance, it could reduce the number of steps needed to pay online, pay internationally, or use wallet funds in more everyday purchase scenarios. It also creates a clearer path for telco fintech units to serve users who want digital payments without moving to a traditional bank account.

For African fintech operators, the key question will be rollout detail. Which markets are included first, what merchant acceptance paths are supported, and what fees and compliance requirements apply as wallets connect to global card networks.
