## Content

## In Short
- Maiaddy is pushing ahead with its own address infrastructure after failing to secure a partnership with NIPOST.
- The startup has launched Maimaps, a location intelligence platform.
- The goal is to standardise how Nigerians describe and share locations using unique street codes.

## What Happened
Maiaddy has launched Maimaps, a location intelligence platform aimed at fixing Nigeria’s address problem. Maiaddy describes itself as a location identity infrastructure startup, meaning it builds the systems that help people and businesses identify places consistently.

The company says it approached the Nigerian Postal Service, NIPOST, in 2024 with a proposal to strengthen national addressing infrastructure. The partnership did not materialise. Maiaddy’s CEO, Obinna Onyejeli, said the team tried outreach by email, social media, and third parties, but did not get traction.

Instead of waiting on government adoption, Maiaddy decided to build independently. Maimaps is launching with products for consumers, developers, and enterprises. “Developers” here means software teams that can plug location tools into apps, similar to how businesses integrate maps or address lookup into checkout, dispatch, or onboarding.

Maiaddy’s approach centres on unique street codes, which are short identifiers assigned to streets or locations to reduce ambiguity. In practice, this is meant to reduce the back-and-forth that happens when a dispatch rider or driver calls for directions, or when a business relies on informal landmarks to find a customer.

## Why It Matters
Addressing affects more than deliveries. Weak location data can slow KYC, which is the identity checks banks and fintechs use to confirm who a customer is. It can also delay emergency response, complicate insurance verification, and reduce the accuracy of government planning.

NIPOST has previously put a number to the problem. Nigeria’s Postmaster General has said the country loses over ₦50 billion each year to failed or inaccurate deliveries.

Maiaddy is entering a market already shaped by global mapping tools and alternatives like Google’s Plus Codes. The open question is whether a private address layer like Maimaps can reach enough coverage and partnerships across logistics, e-commerce, and public services to become a practical standard.
