## Content

## In Short
Safaricom has launched M-PESA Jumbe, a new way for Kenyan customers to prove payment while hiding sensitive details. Eligible merchants can also add staff to receive payment alerts.

## What Happened
Safaricom says M-PESA Jumbe is now live. The feature changes what customers and merchants see when confirming payments made with M-PESA.

In many Kenyan shops, restaurants, and fuel stations, customers are asked to show the confirmation SMS after paying. The problem is that the standard message can reveal extra personal details, including the customer’s full name, phone number, and M-PESA balance.

With Jumbe, customers receive a separate proof-of-payment SMS that is designed to limit what gets exposed at the counter. Instead of showing a full phone number and name, the message uses a JumbeID, which is an alias for the payer.

Safaricom says the JumbeID is built from the first letters of a customer’s first and last names, plus the last two digits of their phone number. For example, “Nancy Kamau” ending in 74 could show as “NK_74”.

The service also targets a second pain point for businesses. Payment notifications often reach the business owner’s phone, not the device in front of the cashier or attendant.

For eligible Lipa na M-PESA and Pochi la Biashara merchants, Jumbe allows a business to nominate extra recipients for payment notifications. That means staff can confirm incoming payments without borrowing the owner’s phone or delaying queues.

## Why It Matters
M-PESA Jumbe is a small product change with real privacy impact. It reduces the amount of personal information a customer needs to show just to complete a sale.

For merchants, adding more recipients to payment alerts can speed up service and reduce disputes. It can also improve internal controls, since staff get the same transaction confirmation signals without requiring access to the owner’s device.

As mobile money becomes even more common across Africa, features like masked payment proof and multi-recipient notifications can help balance convenience with data privacy expectations. For readers tracking mobile money products, see [M-PESA](/m-pesa) for related tools and updates.
