## What Happened
Sportsbook operator [Lucky Fish](/lucky-fish) says it will sponsor a set of national horse racing competitions in South Africa for the 2026/27 season, with a combined prize pool of R4.5 million.

The sponsorship covers four championships. These include a National Trainers Championship and a National Jockey Championship, plus two additional competitions for apprentices and grooms. An apprentice is a junior jockey who is still in training. A groom is a stable staff member responsible for daily care, like feeding, cleaning, and preparing horses.

All four competitions will run across race meetings in the country’s four racing jurisdictions. That structure is meant to make the championships feel national, rather than centred on one region.

Lucky Fish also shared a key rule for the trainers competition. The National Trainers Championship will rank the top 10 trainers based on total winners during the season, not total prize money earned. To qualify, trainers must also saddle at least six horses outside their home jurisdiction. “Saddle” here means entering a horse to race under that trainer’s name.

For horse racing, sponsorship money often shapes which events get attention and how participants are rewarded. Paying out based on number of winners, rather than stakes, can favour consistency across the season, not just a few high-value races.

The travel requirement is also a direct incentive to compete across regions. That could raise field quality at more meetings and help smaller centres attract top stables and riders.
