## Content

## In Short
- Kuunda has completed a $5 million secondary share transaction.
- The deal was led by E4E Africa, and it let some early backers sell part of their stakes.
- Secondary sales are still rare in African tech, but they can provide investor exits without an IPO or acquisition.

## What Happened
[Kuunda](/kuunda), a South African fintech, has closed a $5 million secondary share deal. In a secondary transaction, the company does not receive new cash. Instead, existing shareholders sell their shares to another investor.

E4E Africa led the purchase and increased its ownership position in Kuunda. For early investors, the sale created a route to liquidity, meaning they can turn some of their paper gains into cash without waiting for a public listing.

Kuunda was founded in 2018 and provides lending infrastructure for banks and digital platforms. Lending infrastructure is the behind-the-scenes software that helps financial institutions issue credit, assess risk, and manage repayments.

The company says its platform has facilitated more than 870 million loans worth over $4.4 billion to around 14.6 million users. Those users include merchants, agents, and consumers.

Kuunda operates in five African markets and says it plans to expand into seven more countries.

The transaction follows Kuunda’s $7.5 million pre-Series A round in October 2025, which included E4E Africa, 4Di Capital, and [Nedbank](/nedbank).

## Why It Matters
Secondary share sales are one of the clearest signs that a startup market is maturing. They create an exit option for early investors, founders, and employees, even when IPOs and large acquisitions are limited.

For African fintech, the deal also reflects a shift in what investors want. Profitability and proven scale can attract longer-term capital, not only new primary funding rounds.

If more growth-stage startups can support structured secondary deals, it could help unlock more early-stage investing across the continent. Investors are more willing to fund new companies when they see realistic paths to returns.
