# Kenya Power Builds Two Coast Substations for Reliability

Kenya Power will spend KSh765m on two new substations in Kilifi and Kwale to improve electricity reliability and support rising demand from homes and SMEs.

Kenya Power is investing about KSh765 million to build two new electricity substations in Kilifi and Kwale counties.

## What Happened
[Kenya Power](/kenya-power) said it is nearing completion of the Bomani 132/33kV substation in Kilifi County, a project budgeted at KSh455 million.

A substation is a grid facility that steps electricity voltage up or down, like a traffic junction for power, so it can be moved long distances and then distributed safely to homes and businesses.

Kenya Power says the Bomani substation will serve growing demand in Kikambala, Vipingo, Kanamai, and Mtwapa.

Those areas have seen more industrial and commercial activity, including SMEs expanding from Mombasa. Today, customers there are mainly served by the Kilifi and Bamburi 132/33kV substations, which Kenya Power says are running close to capacity.

The utility also plans to complete a 33/11kV substation in Kwale at a cost of KSh310 million.

This Kwale substation will include four feeders, which are outgoing power lines that distribute electricity to multiple areas. Kenya Power said the feeders will serve the Kwale County headquarters and nearby areas including Kinango, Tiwi, and Kombani.

The new Kwale site is expected to relieve the existing Diani substation and provide alternative supply points, which can reduce outages when one line or station has a fault.

Kenya Power CEO Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror said the company is also pursuing network reinforcement and “smart grid” work, meaning more digital monitoring and automation to help detect faults faster and improve customer service.

More reliable electricity supply supports business continuity for hotels, manufacturers, retail, and digital services along the Coast.

For tech and telecom operators, stronger distribution capacity can reduce downtime risks tied to local grid constraints, especially as data use and commercial power needs rise.

The investment also reflects pressure from fast customer growth. Kenya Power said it connected 411,710 new customers in the year ended June 2026, bringing its total customer base to 10.4 million.
