## In Short
- The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) has launched a 16-week pilot with the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA).
- The goal is to help 10 South African tech SMEs become investor-ready and connect to new markets and capital.
- The selected companies are in health, agriculture, and fintech.

## What Happened
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange, or JSE, has started a new programme aimed at preparing 10 South African tech SMEs for investment. The programme is run with the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), a government body that helps turn research and tech ideas into sellable products.

The pilot launched on September 30 and will run for 16 weeks. It is designed to give participating startups access to capital markets expertise, meaning practical guidance on how public and private investors evaluate companies. It also includes exposure to investor networks and commercial opportunities.

According to the statement shared about the programme, the 10 companies were selected based on having an existing product or service, operating maturity, and commercial potential. Participants will get support on “investment readiness” and pitch development, which usually covers things like financial modelling, governance, fundraising materials, and how to explain a business to investors.

The programme also includes a market access day and sector-focused engagements. In simple terms, this is structured time with JSE-linked networks, potential partners, and possible funders.

## Why It Matters
For many African startups, the biggest gap is not building a product, it is packaging the business in a way investors can fund. A funding-ready pitch pack can reduce delays and improve outcomes when founders start fundraising.

For the JSE, the pilot is also a test. It signals the exchange is exploring a role earlier in the funding pipeline, well before a company is large enough to list.

If the pilot produces companies with stronger investor materials, real market linkages, and active capital conversations, it could become a repeatable pathway. Some participants may also become eligible for AltX screening, which is the JSE’s initial assessment process for companies that may one day list on its alternative exchange for smaller businesses.
