## In Short
Japan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has committed $10.4 million to support the expansion of innovation hubs across Nigeria. The disclosure was made by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Director General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, at the foundation laying ceremony of the Renewed Hope Startup Hub in Abuja.

## What Happened: Japan Support For Startup Financing And Infrastructure
Abdullahi said JICA is also working with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) to establish a $50 million seed-funding facility for startups. Seed funding is early money for startups, often used to build a first product and hire a small team.

Japan’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Hideo Suzuki, said Japan’s support for Nigeria’s startup ecosystem rests on three pillars. These are strengthening policies and institutions, supporting early stage investment, and providing infrastructure through the Renewed Hope Startup Hub.

Suzuki said the hub will provide facilities and equipment needed to turn ideas into viable businesses. He described it as a space with digital fabrication tools and collaborative areas, and said it would help entrepreneurs connect with global partners and support Nigeria’s economic diversification.

Suzuki also said Japan’s approach focuses on nurturing businesses over the long term rather than pursuing quick financial exits.

## What NITDA Reported: Startups Supported And Jobs Created
Abdullahi said initiatives implemented through NITDA’s Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI) have supported more than 995 startups and contributed to the creation of 7,596 jobs.

He added that 300 companies had received training through a digital export acceleration programme over the past three years.

He also highlighted the expansion of the iHatch programme, jointly developed by NITDA and JICA through ONDI in 2023. According to him, the programme trained 333 startups across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory between 2025 and early 2026, alongside 74 innovation hub managers.

He cited the We Elevate and IgniteHatch initiatives for women entrepreneurs. Through those programmes, 224 women owned enterprises had received training, 12 founders were sponsored to Japan, and one beneficiary secured a grant worth $500,000.

## Why It Matters: A Push For Wider Access Beyond Major Tech Centres
Abdullahi said NITDA is working to ensure every state in Nigeria has at least two functioning innovation hubs. He said these hubs are intended to help young entrepreneurs access incubation programmes and build market ready products and services.

He said the objective is to widen access to entrepreneurial support beyond major technology centres and enable more young Nigerians to participate in the digital economy.
