## In Short
Itana is building a licensed digital trade zone in Nigeria. The goal is to help African startups register locally, access incentives, and still sell globally.

## What Happened
[Itana](/itana) is positioning its digital free zone as an alternative to the long running trend of African startups incorporating abroad.

A digital free zone, also called a Digital Special Economic Zone, is a government approved business area with special rules. In this case, it is designed for digital and service businesses that can operate remotely, like a software startup that sells online.

Itana says eligible companies can complete incorporation in 24 to 48 hours. The zone also allows 100 percent foreign ownership without a local partner, and it offers faster visa processing.

Pricing on Itana’s website lists a setup cost of $2,000 for the first year, then $1,000 per year to renew.

The project has been in motion since 2023 and is licensed by the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority. In September 2026, Nigeria’s Presidency described the broader Itana Innovation project as a $500 million development, which signals the scale of the plan.

Some startups are already testing the route. Entertainment and technology company Choplife, founded by Nigerian musician Mr Eazi, said in August 2026 that it joined Itana’s digital free zone.

## Why It Matters
Many African founded companies move their parent company registration to places like Delaware or London to raise capital. Investors often prefer jurisdictions with clearer company law and familiar shareholder protections.

If Itana can make Nigeria incorporation faster, more predictable, and more investor friendly, it could reduce the need for foreign holding companies. That can keep more legal and tax structure closer to where teams operate.

For founders, the trade off will be whether the incentives and regulatory clarity in the zone are strong enough to match what foreign incorporation offers. The answer will shape how “digital free zones” evolve across Africa, especially for startups selling cross border services.
