## What Happened
[Hisa](/hisa) has shipped a new feature called “US IPO Integration” in its latest app release. It lets eligible Kenyan retail investors access selected US initial public offerings, also called IPOs.

An IPO is when a private company sells shares to the public for the first time and lists on a stock exchange like the NYSE or Nasdaq. Many retail investors only get easy access after listing, which can mean buying after early price moves.

With the new integration, users can discover IPOs that are available to them and place an indication to participate when an offering opens. Access is not blanket, it depends on eligibility checks and on how much stock is allocated.

Hisa says participation is subject to eligibility rules and allocation limits. Allocation limits are caps on how many shares a platform can distribute to its users, since IPO shares are usually limited and often prioritized for larger institutions.

## Why It Matters
For Kenyan retail investors, IPO access inside an investment app could shorten the gap between hearing about a US listing and being able to take part. It also brings a previously institution-heavy product into a more familiar retail workflow, similar to buying listed US shares.

Still, IPO investing carries higher risk than buying established public stocks. Pricing can be volatile in the first days of trading. And because allocation is limited, many users may request shares but receive fewer than they asked for.

The rollout is another sign that African investment platforms are expanding beyond secondary market trading into primary market participation. If demand is strong, it could push more apps to pursue similar US market access and improve onboarding, KYC, and suitability checks for higher-risk products.
