## Content

## In Short
Herotel is preparing a new internet service called Evry.

The service will use Amazon Leo satellites, with a commercial launch planned for 2027.

Herotel says the goal is to connect South African users in farms, small towns, and rural areas that lack reliable broadband.

## What Happened
South African ISP [Herotel](/herotel) says it is building its Evry satellite internet offering using Amazon’s Leo satellite network, according to an interview with CEO Van Zyl Botha published on October 20.

The partnership was announced in July. Botha said the company is now integrating Evry into Amazon systems. That integration is meant to make setup faster, so customers can be activated quickly once the service goes live.

The pitch is simple. Users would not need fibre cables or fixed wireless towers at their home or business. Instead, they would rely on a compact antenna that connects to low earth orbit satellites.

Low earth orbit means the satellites fly much closer to Earth than older geostationary satellites. In the interview, Herotel contrasted the older model, about 35,000 kilometres away, with Leo satellites orbiting around 590 kilometres above Earth. Being closer usually reduces latency, which is the delay you feel in apps like video calls and online gaming.

Herotel says it currently has about 350,000 active customers across 550 towns through fibre and wireless networks, plus 120 offices and more than 1,400 employees. The company believes that footprint can help it sell, install, and support the new satellite service locally.

## Why It Matters
If Evry works as described, it could expand broadband options for areas where network buildouts do not make business sense. That is the usual challenge for rural connectivity, because towers and fibre are typically deployed where population density is high.

Herotel also framed the rollout as a jobs story. A satellite service still needs local installers and support teams, and the company says it can use its existing operations to deliver that work inside South Africa.

The main dependency is timing. Amazon still needs to launch enough satellites to provide coverage. Herotel expects that ramp-up to align with Evry’s planned 2027 launch.
