## Content

## In Short
- HealthLeap raised US$38 million across seed and Series A.
- The startup uses clinical AI to scan hospital patient records and flag risks clinicians may miss.
- It plans to expand beyond malnutrition into more hospital conditions.

## What Happened
[HealthLeap](/healthleap) said it has raised US$38 million in combined seed and Series A funding.

HealthLeap is a South Africa-founded clinical AI startup started in 2022 by siblings Josiah and Jemima Meyer. The company builds software that screens hospital patients for conditions that often go undiagnosed.

The platform reads a patient’s electronic health record, or EHR, each morning. An EHR is the hospital’s digital file for a patient, including notes, lab results, vital signs, medication orders, and problem lists. HealthLeap then produces a risk score and pushes it into a clinician’s existing EHR workflow, so care teams can prioritise who needs attention first.

The round included backing from Sequoia Capital, First Round Capital, and Hummingbird Ventures. HealthLeap said the funding will support hiring across engineering, sales, customer success, and product.

HealthLeap started with a focus on malnutrition screening. It now plans to expand its clinical AI coverage to conditions including congestive heart failure, pressure ulcers, and a range of hospital-acquired infections. Hospital-acquired infections are infections patients pick up while receiving care in a hospital.

## Why It Matters
Hospitals sit on large volumes of patient data, but much of it is hard to review quickly during busy shifts. Tools that summarise risk early can help clinicians catch missed conditions sooner.

HealthLeap is also leaning into an operational and financial point hospitals care about. When more cases are correctly identified and treated, hospitals can improve outcomes and also capture reimbursement revenue tied to documented care.

If HealthLeap can prove consistent results across more conditions and more hospital systems, it could become part of routine EHR workflows. That is a high bar, but it is also how clinical software scales inside hospitals.
