## Content

## In Short
- Halo Sim Labs has built a simulation-based platform to teach emotional intelligence and preventative mental health in schools.
- The startup is preparing to pilot in four rural South African primary schools with about 320 learners.
- It is bootstrapped so far and moving from product development into structured school testing.

## What Happened
Halo Sim Labs is a South African ed-tech startup building interactive simulations that put learners inside realistic social situations. The goal is to teach emotional intelligence, meaning skills like empathy, emotional regulation, and decision-making.

The platform uses scenario-based learning, similar to a choose-your-own-adventure story. Learners face situations such as peer pressure, bullying, and substance use. They choose what to do and then see the consequences of those choices.

Founder Thembelihle Zwane says the product is designed to be culturally relevant for African learners. That means the language, context, and social dynamics should feel familiar, rather than imported from other education systems.

The company, Halo Sim Labs, was founded in January and has been bootstrapped to date. It is now preparing to pilot with four rural primary schools in South Africa. The first rollout will focus on Grades 6 and 7, covering roughly 320 learners, but the broader product target is Grades 3 to 12.

## Why It Matters
Many school programs teach social and emotional learning in a classroom lesson format. Halo Sim Labs is betting that simulations can help close the gap between knowing what to do and applying it under pressure.

If the pilot shows strong learner engagement and measurable skills improvement, Halo Sim Labs could offer schools a practical way to add preventative mental health education without waiting for a crisis. For education leaders, this also tests a model that can scale across regions while still reflecting local culture.

The next step will be how Halo measures outcomes in the pilot and whether it can convert interest from other schools into longer-term deployments.
