## Content

## In Short
China-Africa trade is rising fast, and Grey wants to handle more of the payments. The focus is helping Africans pay Chinese suppliers more directly, often in yuan.

## What's Going On: Africa-China Trade Payments And CNY Settlement
Africa-China trade is expected to pass $400 billion by the end of 2026. In the first half of 2026, $203.5 billion in transactions moved through the corridor.

A large share of the trade is government-linked, but a meaningful portion is private commerce. This includes African SMEs and individuals importing inventory, machinery, electronics, textiles, and factory inputs from China.

[Grey](/grey) is positioning itself as the payment rail for those buyers. Payment rails are the behind-the-scenes tracks that move money between countries, like the plumbing for cross-border transfers.

The problem is speed and access. Traditional bank transfers can be slow, expensive, and hard to reconcile, meaning it is difficult to match a payment to an invoice. Some importers also need to pay in CNY, which adds extra foreign exchange steps.

Grey is part of a wider group of African fintechs trying to simplify cross-border payments and supplier settlements. Tools like [Verto](/verto) also target international transfers for businesses, but Grey is leaning into the Africa to China corridor and yuan payments.

## What To Watch: Compliance, FX, And Merchant Adoption
If more African importers shift payments from banks and informal brokers to fintech platforms, transaction volumes could follow quickly. The corridor is already large and still growing.

The hard part is compliance and liquidity. Compliance means meeting rules on identity checks, anti-money laundering, and transaction monitoring. Liquidity means consistently sourcing CNY at predictable rates when users need to pay.

Watch for new partnerships with Chinese payment networks, banks, or trading platforms. Also watch whether Grey expands local collection options across more African markets, since easy local funding often decides which cross-border tool wins.
