## Content

## In Short
Google Wallet and Google Pay are now available in Nigeria. The launch targets a long running adoption problem for contactless payments, where cards and NFC enabled PoS terminals exist, but most people still prefer bank transfers.

## What Happened
Google Wallet and Google Pay launched in Nigeria following an October 28, 2026 announcement by Google.

Condia notes that physical contactless cards have been in Nigeria since at least November 2015, and many PoS terminals already have NFC hardware. Yet contactless use is estimated at about 0.1% of transactions.

The article argues that bank transfers feel more “controllable” for customers because they can see the amount, confirm it, and receive an alert. By contrast, tapping a card can feel uncertain, especially when it does not require a PIN.

At Condia’s Borderless Experience, Interswitch’s Akeem Lawal said trust is the larger obstacle, because customers may assume tap without PIN is less secure than it is. Zest Payments CEO Kemi Manuel said merchants hesitate to push contactless even though most PoS terminals already support it.

## Why It Matters
The Condia piece says paying with a phone can change the trust equation. Phones use biometrics like fingerprint or face open up, so each tap includes proof tied to the device owner. It also uses tokenisation, which replaces the real card number with a restricted digital substitute. Condia says a stolen token has little value outside the device or context it was issued for.

On the supply side, Google has enabled Wallet and Pay for Android and Wear OS users. Early banks including UBA, FirstBank, GTBank and Zenith have enabled eligible cards. Interswitch is providing the tokenisation and issuer connectivity that allows those cards to work inside the wallets.

Condia adds that if more customers carry cards on their phones, merchants are more likely to see demand at checkout and start supporting contactless more actively.
