## In Short
Google and the Elba Hope Foundation have launched a $1 million initiative to expand access to AI tools for creative professionals across Africa.

The programme targets about 100,000 creators in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and Sierra Leone.

## What Happened: How The Programme Works
Google and the Elba Hope Foundation, established by British actor Idris Elba, partnered on the programme to address financial and technology barriers for independent creators, especially those with limited production resources.

Participants will get access to Google’s Gemini AI assistant and other digital tools. An AI assistant is software that helps with tasks such as drafting, summarising and planning.

Google says eligible creators can use AI tools for content planning, research, writing and some parts of digital production.

The initiative was announced at Google’s Africa Cloud Summit in Johannesburg. Google’s Senior Vice President for Research and Technology, James Manyika, linked the effort to making digital production resources more accessible to African creators.

Idris Elba also highlighted the need to address barriers that stop creative professionals from accessing the technology and resources needed to develop their work.

## Why It Matters: Benefits And Open Questions
The programme could support filmmakers, designers, digital publishers, social media content producers and others working in Africa’s growing creative economy.

The source also notes that access to AI software is only one part of creators’ broader challenges. High internet costs, inconsistent electricity supply, limited financing and difficulties monetising digital content still affect creative businesses in several markets.

There are unanswered questions about how participants will be selected, how long free access will last, and whether training will be included.

The source adds that issues like intellectual property, originality, and responsible use of AI generated material may shape adoption. The longer term impact will depend on how many creators use the tools and whether this leads to measurable gains in productivity, output and economic opportunities.
