## In Short
The Gates Foundation’s Nigeria director, Uche Amaonwu, told builders at Moonshot by TechCabal in Lagos that Africa’s AI success should be judged by improvements in healthcare, education and incomes.

## What Happened
The Gates Foundation urged African artificial intelligence developers to track real world outcomes, not the number of products shipped.

Uche Amaonwu said AI could widen access to knowledge, services and economic opportunity. He also warned that the upside depends on “deliberate choices” in how AI is developed, financed and deployed.

“For a technology to really be impactful, it has to touch the lives of people,” Amaonwu said during a keynote address.

He framed this as a challenge for both developers and investors looking for AI use cases across the continent. In his view, many tools look promising in trials, but need to move into the institutions and communities that are expected to use them.

Amaonwu also pointed to the foundation’s Goalkeepers report on AI and equity, released around the UN General Assembly. He described the report’s message as “exciting, but also cautionary,” adding that AI could become “a powerful equaliser.”

## Why It Matters
The message sets a clearer yardstick for AI work in African markets. Amaonwu is asking teams to define impact in human terms, like better care, better learning outcomes and higher incomes, then build and fund AI deployments that can reach people at scale.

It is also a reminder that product launches and pilots are not the end goal. The harder work is adoption inside public and private institutions, and reaching the communities those institutions serve.
