## Content

## In Short
- Ghana has launched GAFET, an endowment fund aimed at long-term financing for agricultural education.
- The target is GH¢100 million by December 2028, starting from GH¢3.5 million in founding capital.
- The fund plans to support 21 institutions and improve practical training, research, and digital agriculture.

## What Happened
GAFET, the Ghana Agricultural Fund for Education and Transformation, has been launched as a national endowment to support agricultural education and skills development. An endowment is a pool of money that is invested, while the main amount is kept intact, then the yearly returns are used to fund projects.

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture says the fund is meant to fix a mismatch in the sector. Agriculture contributes more than a fifth of Ghana’s economy, but only about 2 percent of tertiary students are enrolled in agriculture programmes. Education institutions in the space also face an estimated annual funding gap of about GH¢12 million.

GAFET will focus on labs, demonstration farms, mechanisation, digital agriculture, research and innovation, agribusiness incubation, and faculty development. Digital agriculture means using software, data, and connected tools to plan farming and improve yields, similar to how businesses use dashboards to manage sales.

The fund has mobilised GH¢3.5 million so far. It is targeting GH¢10 million by December 2026 and expects to move to a full endowment structure in Q4 2026, with a governing board, a fund administrator, a fund manager, and a custodian bank.

Several Ghanaian-led agribusinesses have joined as founding partners, including [Farmerline](/farmerline). Another founding partner, [Grow For Me](/grow-for-me), says it will open its crowdfunding platform to help the fund grow.

## Why It Matters
If GAFET’s governance and investment plan holds, it could create more predictable funding for agricultural colleges and university departments. That matters for building job-ready graduates with hands-on skills, not just classroom knowledge.

For startups and agribusinesses, stronger training pipelines can widen the talent pool for agritech, farm services, and food supply chain roles. For Ghana’s financial sector, the plan also signals a push to bring banks, pension funds, insurers, and private capital into long-term human capital funding.
