## Content

## In Short
FNB has announced a partnership with VALR to add crypto buying and selling inside the FNB app.

## What Happened
On October 6, 2026, FNB said customers will be able to buy Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other digital assets directly through the FNB app.

The bank is partnering with [VALR](/valr), a South Africa-based crypto exchange. A crypto exchange is an app or platform where users buy and sell cryptocurrencies, similar to how a stockbroker lets you trade shares.

The service is positioned as low-friction access, with purchases starting from R10. For many retail users, that minimum matters because it makes small, test-sized buys possible.

This is another example of “bank distribution” for crypto, where a bank uses its existing customer base and app to distribute a third party’s crypto trading service. Instead of downloading a separate crypto app, users can access trading from within their everyday banking workflow.

## Why It Matters
For VALR, the partnership can unlock cheaper customer acquisition and higher trust. Banks already handle identity checks and payments, which can reduce steps like funding an exchange wallet.

For FNB, the move signals that large banks are getting more comfortable offering crypto access in a regulated and app-native way. That can pull crypto activity away from informal channels and toward products with clearer compliance controls.

For the wider South African fintech market, this raises the bar for competing exchanges and banks. Users will likely compare fees, spreads (the gap between buy and sell prices), asset selection, and how quickly they can move money in and out.

It also increases pressure on consumer education. Crypto prices can move fast, and app-based access can make it easy for new users to buy without fully understanding risk.
