## Content

## In Short
- Oluwatobiloba Animashaun has resigned from Flutterwave after eight years.
- She joined in 2018 as a customer service intern during Nigeria’s NYSC year.
- She later moved into product management and worked on Barter and the Flutterwave mobile app.

## What Happened
Oluwatobiloba Animashaun has left [Flutterwave](/flutterwave), ending an eight-year stint at the African fintech.

Animashaun joined the company in 2018 as a customer service intern. At the time, she had just graduated from Lagos State University with a degree in history and international relations and was completing the National Youth Service Scheme, Nigeria’s one-year mandatory service programme for graduates.

She said she was first drawn to Flutterwave after seeing a co-founder explain the company’s virtual card product. Virtual cards are digital versions of bank cards used for online payments, like paying for Netflix or Spotify without a physical card.

Over time, she moved from customer support into product management. Product management is the job of deciding what to build, why it matters, and coordinating teams like engineering, design, and operations to ship it.

In her later role, she worked on the Barter app, which was later discontinued, and on the Flutterwave mobile app. She also described how the company’s mission felt personal, citing the friction her family faced when sending money from abroad.

## Why It Matters
Leadership and talent movement is a key signal in fast-growing fintechs. Flutterwave has expanded beyond payments into more products, partnerships, and regulated financial services discussions, which raises the bar for experienced operators who can ship and maintain complex financial products.

Animashaun’s story also reflects a common talent path in African startups. Many early employees start in support or operations, then move into product roles once they understand user pain points at scale. In payments, those insights matter because small failures can mean lost funds, delayed settlements, or compliance risk.

For founders and operators, the takeaway is practical. Customer support is not just a cost centre, it can be a training ground for product leaders who build payment tools based on real merchant and consumer issues.
