## Content

## In Short
Flutterwave employees can borrow money against their vested shares without selling them. The programme is being offered through Techdollar, a US private-credit startup.

## What Happened: How Flutterwave Set Up Share-Backed Loans
[Flutterwave](/flutterwave) said employees can now take loans backed by vested shares, meaning shares that have already been earned and can be owned. The company said the loans give staff access to cash before a company sale or a stock-market listing, while letting them keep any future gains on their equity.

Olugbenga “GB” Agboola, Flutterwave’s founder and CEO, said in a statement: “I always say that our people are our secret sauce and the driving force behind our success at Flutterwave, and we believe they should share in the value they create without having to wait for a major liquidity event.”

Flutterwave described the programme as an alternative to selling shares during a funding round or waiting for an exit. TechCabal noted that these have historically been two of the few ways startup employees in Africa have been able to turn equity into cash.

## The Details: Loan Terms And Where Funds Land
Under the arrangement, Techdollar will lend against employees’ vested shares for six to 12 months. It will typically advance less than half of the shares’ value.

If a borrower defaults, the lender can seize and sell the pledged shares. Employees keep their equity if they repay the loan, but risk losing it if they do not.

Flutterwave said the loans will be paid into accounts that employees open with Nuvion, a Miami-based digital bank for businesses. TechCabal also reported that Nuvion already powers Flutterwave’s stablecoin products.

## Why It Matters: Equity Value Without An Exit
For African startup employees, equity can be a significant part of compensation, but it often does not help with immediate expenses. Companies rarely sell or list, leaving staff waiting for a liquidity event that may take years, or never happen.

Flutterwave, valued at $3.25 billion, said in April that it was not close to an initial public offering (IPO).
