## What Happened
[Flutterwave](/flutterwave), the payments company, has named Morounke Olufemi as Global CFO. She takes over from Mitesh Popat, who joined the company in 2024.

A CFO, short for chief financial officer, runs a company’s finance function. That usually includes budgeting, reporting, fundraising support, and planning for profitability.

In a LinkedIn post, CEO Olugbenga Agboola said Popat helped build a “disciplined financial foundation” and positioned the business for long-term profitability. Popat is leaving the day-to-day CFO role to pursue entrepreneurial interests as a co-founder of Next Communications, a firm focused on turning telecom infrastructure into digital capabilities for brands.

Popat will continue to work with the company as a strategic adviser.

Olufemi previously worked closely with Popat as Flutterwave’s CFO for EMEA, meaning Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. She joined Flutterwave in 2025 after serving as Group CFO at Access Holdings, where she oversaw finance across a group spanning banking, payments, consumer lending, asset management, and insurance.

Her earlier experience includes roles at Lehman Brothers Investment Bank Europe, AXA XL, and Old Mutual, plus professional credentials in finance.

Leadership changes in finance are closely watched in African fintech, especially for large payments firms balancing growth with tighter compliance and profitability targets.

For Flutterwave, promoting an internal finance leader who already ran the EMEA region can reduce disruption. It can also help maintain continuity on reporting, controls, and planning as the company continues to expand its payments business.
