## In Short
Esca says it is now registered as a payment service provider in Canada. The update was published on October 6, 2026.

## What Happened
[Esca](/esca) announced it has been registered as a Payment Service Provider, or PSP, in Canada.

A PSP is a company that helps move money, for example by enabling collections, payouts, or wallet-like stored balances. In Canada, PSPs that perform “retail payment activities” are supervised under the Retail Payment Activities Act, or RPAA.

Esca said this registration brings its Canadian payment activities into the Bank of Canada’s supervisory framework. It also noted that registration is not a licence or an endorsement by the Bank of Canada.

Under the RPAA framework, the Bank of Canada registers eligible PSPs and supervises them against requirements. These include operational risk management, incident response processes, safeguarding of end-user funds, and regulatory reporting.

Esca positioned the milestone as part of strengthening the infrastructure businesses use for cross-border payments, foreign exchange, and treasury operations. Treasury here means the internal finance function that manages cash, liquidity, and currency exposure across accounts and markets.

## Why It Matters
For African and Africa-linked businesses operating globally, regulatory clarity can affect vendor risk checks, banking partnerships, and how comfortable finance teams feel running payments through a provider.

Esca’s move may also matter for companies that collect in one currency and pay out in another, since that workflow often includes holding balances, converting FX, and reconciling payments across multiple countries.

The broader takeaway is that more cross-border fintechs are formalising operations in major markets. That can help them win enterprise customers that require documented oversight, controls, and incident-response standards before onboarding a payments partner.
